Brady Street Festival 2016

Brady Street is an ethnically diverse community near downtown Milwaukee and within easy walking distance to the shore of lake Michigan.

First named in 1840, Brady Street is an architectural tapestry of buildings mostly constructed between 1860 and 1930, creating a distinctive neighborhood that was home to early Polish, German and Irish immigrants. In the 1930's it became more predominantly Italian; some of the businesses still bear the names of these pioneering Italian families today.

In the 1960s, Brady Street became Milwaukee's very own "Haight-Ashbury" complete with flower children, peace and love, underground political publications and the infamous hippiefest known as Brady Street Days.

Today it is still known for its diversity with a unique mix of specialty retail shops, ethnic cuisine, cool coffee shops, chic salons and a vibrant nightlife.

Once a year, Brady Street becomes a special event for all to enjoy.

Beachcombers

This video and slide show was taken in early May 2016 on the Shores of Lake Michigan at Doctors Park and the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Fox Point, Wisconsin.

Doctors Park has been around for many years, and is thought of as primarily a Fox Point Park. It is however quite charming and worth a visit more than once for anyone. This video is primarily about the beach, which is quite rustic. More can be found at Doctors Park Friends.

The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center is better known and is supported by membership and event fees.  Schlitz Audubon is both a destination for adventure and an oasis from the busyness of life. Their Raptor Program has taken up the mantle of “feathered ambassadors” and is dedicated to providing infor­mation about their wild relatives, habitat concerns, and issues facing raptors today.

The beaches for both destinations are right next to each other and are a worthwhile discovery.

Schlitz Audubon Nature Center

Once a farm for the Schlitz Brewery draft horses, the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center is Milwaukee’s comprehensive nature center. It offers six miles of trails through 185 unique acres of forests, wetlands, restored prairies, ravines, bluffs and a Lake Michigan shoreline.

You will see evidence of the active and progressive management of the land, restoring habitats unique to our region and reclaiming our bountiful natural history.

Pioneer Village World War II Living History Event, May 21, 2016

Pioneer Village is a collection of over 24 restored buildings and structures dated from the 1840's to early 1900's, nestled in a unique rural village setting amidst the rolling Hawthorne Hills. On May 21, 2016 The Ozaukee County Historical Society held a World War II Living History Event nestled on the grounds of Pioneer Village, within these restored structures. Battles and demonstrations were staged; equipment, vehicles, weaponry and uniforms could be seen.

United Service Organizations for National Defense Stateside Operations; WWII Living History Group

We are a group of women and men dedicated to preserving the history of the United Service Organizations (USO) during the World War Two time period. Our mission is not only that of preservation, but also one of education. Our goal is to represent the experiences of the women and men of the World War Two era USO through participation in living history displays, re-enactments, parades, and ceremonies.

Our members portray a wide range of folk, just like the real people of the World War Two USO. However, we are mainly concerned with the portrayal of the average Jane and average Joe; those unsung volunteer heroes of the USO, whose combined efforts were nothing short of herculean and their impact monumentally important to the nation's war effort.
